Futuristic US Fighter Jet Unveiled During Super Bowl 50 TV Ad

American defense contractor Northrop Grumman unveiled its vision for the Pentagon's new futuristic fighter jet on Sunday in a television commercial broadcast to over 100 million viewers during the Super Bowl,

The aircraft, which has no tail and fires lasers in a way that will not alert enemies to its presence, flashed across the television screen in a snippet of Northrop's 30-second commercial broadcast during Super Bowl 50.

Northrop is expected to compete with Lockheed Martin and Boeing when the Pentagon begins accepting bids for its sixth-generation fighter jet.

As the biggest US sporting event of the year, the Super Bowl draws a massive TV audience, and the commercials are one of the most anticipated parts of the broadcast. A 30-second ad shown during this year's game cost nearly $5 million

On Sunday, Northrop Grumman's commercial was broadcast to an average 111.9 million viewers who watched Super Bowl 50, the third-most watched TV show in history, according to the Nielsen company. On the field, the Denver Broncos upset the Carolina Panthers, 24 to 10.

The most-watched Super Bowl took place last year, when 114.4 million viewers tuned in to watch the New England Patriots defeat the Seattle Seahawks.

That year, Northrop Grumman made history by airing what is believed to be the first Super Bowl ad for a defense contractor. The advertisement focused on the company’s entry in the Air Force's Long Range Strike Bomber competition, which won a $60-billion contract in October.

A sixth-generation fighter, meanwhile, will likely not be fielded for 15 to 20 years, eventually replacing the F/A-18 Super Hornet and possibly even the F-22 Raptor. The Pentagon is still struggling to fully field its fifth-generation fighter, the Lockheed Martin F-35 Joint Strike Fighter.

The F-35 program has experienced significant system malfunctions, major cost overruns and many schedule delays. It is expected to cost some $1.5 trillion over its 55-year lifespan, making it most expensive weapons program in history.

BAE Systems AMV35 ready to go

BAE Systems Australia is ready to demonstrate its solution to the Australian Army’s mounted combat reconnaissance requirements.
Our three test vehicles are built and ready to go for the Army’s 12 months testing in the Risk Mitigation stage of the tender evaluation later this year.
BAE Systems is committed to manufacturing this vehicle in Australia. If selected as the successful tender, the vehicle will be manufactured, assembled and supported in Australia, with manufacturing, technology and intellectual capability transitioning to an Australian production line.
This will secure and retain in-country capability and contribute significantly to the Australian economy throughout the expected 30 plus year life of the vehicles.
BAE Systems Australia and the Finnish Patria have teamed to produce the AMV35 as our offer for Phase 2 of the Australian Army’s Land 400 Program.
The vehicle integrates the combat-proven CV9035 turret from BAE Systems Hagglunds onto a modern, agile, highly protected military-off-the-shelf (MOTS) Patria Armoured Modular Vehicle (AMV).
Our BAE Systems / Patria team brings together 60 years of Australian experience with global expertise in production and sustainment.
Australia will benefit from our established networks and track record of successful technology transfer to user nations.
BAE Systems in Australia has the engineering, manufacturing, and support capabilities and access to global expertise that makes it an ideal partner to offer the Patria AMV into the Australian market.

The Land 400 Phase 2 Down Select for evaluation of tender vehicles is expected to be announced toward the end of the first quarter of this year.
